Hailu Mekonnen of Ethiopia won the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday in a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 35 seconds. Mekonnen's time was 11 seconds off the race record set by Switzerland's Viktor Rothlin in 2008. Kenyan Paul Biwott was second with a time of 2:08:17 while Japan's Yuki Kawaguchi took third in 2:08:37. Ethiopians Girma Assefa and Koren Yal set new course records to complete a sweep for the African country, winning the men's and women's honours at the eighth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon here today. World-record holder Haile Gebrselassie stunned the running world by announcing his retirement Sunday after dropping out of the New York City Marathon. The 37-year-old Ethiopian great, widely considered the greatest distance runner ever, pulled out at the 16-mile mark with a right knee injury. “I never think about to retire. Debutants stole the show at the New York City marathon Sunday as Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam won the men's race on his marathon debut and Kenya's Edna Kiplagat took the women's title in her first New York race. Gebremariam, the 2009 world cross country champion, ran with easy grace through the last hilly stretch in Central Park to pull away from Emmanuel Mutai for a comfortable win in two hours eight minutes 14 seconds.
