Foreign Trade Minister Zafer Çağlayan on Tuesday said Ethiopia will be an important partner for improving trade relations between African nations and Turkey.
Speaking at a briefing of Turkish businessmen in Ethiopia’s capital of Addis Ababa, Çağlayan underlined Africa’s importance and added that the continent had been a forgotten land for Turkey, with trade between the two at only $5 billion in 2002, the year the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came to power. This figure had more than tripled, to $17 billion, by 2010.
“Africa’s total imports per year are around $560 billion. Turkey’s annual exports to this continent amount to around $10 billion. This is not enough,” Çağlayan told the Turkish businessmen.
