A Doha court of first instance has ordered the deportation of an African woman, who landed at the Doha airport with 5kg of kat, a banned substance, on December 31, 2008. Kat is a mild narcotic, the leaves of which are chewed in some parts of the region. A forensic report showed that the 22-year-old woman was not a Kat addict. The court sentenced the Ethiopian to a suspended year and fined her QR100,000. The woman had stayed in custody for some 15 months and therefore, she need not pay the heavy fine, court sources told Gulf Times.
