Having remained in limbo for close to a year due to changes in design specifications, the new design of the overpass bridge, which forms part of the Kality-Meskel Square interchange located around Meshualekia, is to be approved by the management board of the Addis Abeba City Roads Authority (AACRA) in two weeks’ time, after which it is to be constructed at a projected cost of close to 27 million Br.
The initial design of the overpass bridge, which was awarded to Eng. Zewdie Eskinder & Co Plc, a local consultancy firm, for around 500,000 Br in 2004, was projected to be constructed at a cost of 12.5 million Br.
However, during excavation for the construction by China Roads and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) Addis Engineering Plc, the rock bed which was supposed to be six metres down was not found. Eng. Zewdie Eskinder & Co Plc had subcontracted the geological survey of the area to Wadsan Plc, another local company, for 50,000 Br.
