Ethiopia’s best-known opposition leader has announced she is quitting politics, at least temporarily, and is going to the United States. Birtukan Mideksa’s departure will leave Ethiopia without a prominent female politician. Mideksa, the leader of Ethiopia's Unity and Democracy for Justice Party, or UDJ, returned home from prison last October to wild celebrations in her Addis Ababa neighborhood. The country’s main opposition leader Birtukan Midekssa reunited with her family on Wednesday after a government pardon put an end to her “very difficult and dreadful” jail term since December 2008. The international community has welcomed the release of Birtukan. “Ethiopian opposition leader is free!” twitted European Member of Parliament Thijs Berman who was chief observer of the EU mission deployed to observe Ethiopia’s May polls. As we were preparing to say grace before eating breakfast this morning, I asked our five year old son if there is anything that he wants me to pray about. Without the slightest of hesitation, he said: "let's pray for Birtukan". And, so, I prayed to God to protect Birtukan from harm while she is in jail. May He sustain her spirit and also give her the strength to endure her separation with her daughter, Hale Mideksa. Amen. (more)

Q. Let’s start by talking about your situation in Akaki federal prison Birtukan: Correction! You mean life at the Akaki Hilton Spa and Resort? Well, the food here is excellent and so are the accommodations. I have my own special room. I like to call it my boudoir. They call it “Solitary Confinement”. It is true that I have “gained a few kilos”, but that is because I spend all of my time in my room. “C’est la vie” at the Akaki Hilton, as they say in French. (more)
