Ethiopia looks likely to significantly grow in importance as a flower-producing nation over the coming years, mounting a challenge to Kenya’s dominance in the flower trade in Africa. Ethiopian govt may ban cotton exports

A proposal to ban raw cotton exports had been drafted by the Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute (ETIDI) and in all likelihood, the Ethiopian government is planning to impose the ban. The textile sector has been insisting on banning exports of raw cotton for the main reason that domestic demand for the white gold has outstripped the supply, and if it runs short, cotton will have to be imported by spending valuable foreign exchange. The ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior have decided not to grant visas to Ethiopian maids without the approval and authorization of the Ethiopian Embassy in Kuwait, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. Sources say more than 10,000 Ethiopian maids have entered Kuwait without the knowledge of the embassy and without proper contracts. The number of Ethiopian maids in Kuwait is said to be over 30,000, excluding the non-registered ones who cause various problems, note sources. (more)
