Ethiopia has recently decided to take a new approach to Eritrean refugees by allowing them to live outside camps, a move welcomed by the United Nations refugee agency. Under the so-called ‘out-of-camp’ scheme announced last week, Eritreans who can sustain themselves financially or have relatives or friends who commit to supporting them no longer have to stay in camps. The notion of economic development should not be divorced from analyzing the nature of the state, the market and community structures into account. That oft-made distinction made between the workings of the economy and the state is deceptive. The issue should be recast asking one basic question, “How does the workings of the State in Africa promote or hamper economic development?” (more)

Yemen to deport 320 Ethiopian migrants

Yemen is deporting 320 Ethiopia migrants including 59 women who entered the country illegally, the country's Interior Ministry announced. Officials said the migrants were fleeing poverty and are in search of jobs but have been detained at the Taiz governorate, south-weastren part of Yemen. The Interior Ministry has ordered the Immigration and Passport Authority in the region and the Prisons Authority to coordinate efforts to arrange for the transportation of the detainees to Sana'a before being deported...
