Ethiopians Girma Assefa and Koren Yal set new course records to complete a sweep for the African country, winning the men's and women's honours at the eighth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon here today. Assefa completed the 42.1-km race in two hours, nine minutes and 54 seconds beating the previous record of 2:11:54s set by Kenya's Kenneth Mungara two years ago. (more)

Debutants stole the show at the New York City marathon Sunday as Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam won the men's race on his marathon debut and Kenya's Edna Kiplagat took the women's title in her first New York race. Gebremariam, the 2009 world cross country champion, ran with easy grace through the last hilly stretch in Central Park to pull away from Emmanuel Mutai for a comfortable win in two hours eight minutes 14 seconds.
