Ethiopian water minister says that his country neither informed Egypt about its plans to construct Nile Dam nor discussed the issue with that country despite fears that the issue could spark a war between both. Meanwhile, work on the 5,250-MW Renaissance Dam has already started, which has angered Egypt further. Egypt has always opposed any construction on the Nile River, on which it claims sole authority as a result of colonial era treaties, which gave Egypt right to about 86 percent of the waters origin... Addis Ababa has qualified fears expressed by Egyptian officials as “unsubstantiated”. Reports from Egypt have indicated that the north African country is alarmed over Ethiopian plans to construct more hydroelectric dams, including a planned power plant at Benishangul state. Harnessing Ethiopia’s rivers for development “Thirsty child of the Nile” is a popular proverbial irony in water-rich Ethiopia where hunger and thirst are rampant amid plenty. The Amharic version widely used is “Ye Abayin lij wuha temat”; it is meant to ridicule the paradox of abject poverty amid plenty; it extends to laxity [...] (more)

Here in the shadow of Mount Gish, the spring water that forms the Blue Nile is believed to have healing powers, but Ethiopians say that is the only benefit they get from the mighty river. "These waters are sacred, they perform miracles for the sick," said Berhanu Melak, an elderly farmer, as he filled a metal trough with water for the throngs of white-cloaked men and women who have been queuing since the early hours in this town 400km north of Addis Ababa. There is a battle over the historic river. Under existing accords, Egypt has veto power over development projects, but upstream nations say they should not be bound by unfair colonial-era pacts. Rice farmers in Egypt’s Nile Delta have been ordered to plant on less land — this year’s reduction is more than 900,000 acres — to conserve water. (more)
