The deal to import 400MW was reached on Monday between Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water and Energy but failed to agree on pricing. According to estimates from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), new hydro-power projects price power between $0.093 (Sh7.70) and $0.111 (Sh9.20) per kilowatt hour. One kilowatt hour is equivalent to a single unit of power consumption - what is used to bill customers. (more)

Ethiopia signed an agreement with a Chinese state-run firm to build the final section of a railway line that will link its capital Addis Ababa to the tiny Red Sea state of Djibouti, an official said. Ethiopia said Monday it needed $398 million to help millions of people in need of food aid due to a severe drought. The Horn of Africa region has been hit by one of its worst droughts in decades which has left millions of people facing starvation. Ash spewing from the Nabro volcano in Eritrea has covered villages in Ethiopia, affecting at least 5,000 people, aid workers say. Initial reports said eight villages in the Biddu district of Ethiopia, close to the border, were covered by volcanic dust. Ethiopia's year-on-year rate of inflation jumped to 34.7 percent in May from 29.5 percent a month earlier, driven by a sharp rise in food prices, official data showed on Tuesday.
